[Tromso, Norway, Jan 18, 2024]
After the hectic couple of days in Tromso, we finally enjoyed much needed slower morning. I could tell the first day of sunrise was almost near – the morning looked a lot brighter than the one before.
First order of business was coffee and pastries at Vervet Bakery. I enjoyed some Muesli bread and skolebolle (school bread) – a Norwegian sweet roll made from yeasted dough filled with custared and decorated with icing dipped in grated coconut. It was usually put in school lunches as a dessert, hence the name.
While at the bakery, I noticed an outdoor venue for the Tromso Film Festival, for which I had also seen signs at the library. They do actually sit outside in the cold and watch movies! Brrrr!
The Polar Museum but did not go in because I didn’t have time. Its exhibitions tell the story of Tromsø as the historical gateway to the Arctic. This includes the story of Norwegian trapping and hunting on Svalbard and Greenland, of renowned over-wintering trappers as well as the expeditions of Norwegian explorers.
And just like that, it was time to head to the airport. I couldn’t resist taking some photos from my window seat. After all, I had picked a window seat exactly for this reason – I normally sit in the isle.
I was connecting in Oslo again and managed to catch the sun above the horizon as I was landing. Experiencing the polar night was awesome, but I don’t know how people do it for a whole month.
